Job description:

Leads and manages the activities of the Tool Room and Die Service/Build Up. Works with design, engineering and production staff to ensure adherence to quality, timelines, scheduling and safety requirements. Supervises, mentors and trains department staff.
As part of the plant leadership team, participates in the attainment of department and company goals and demonstrates Core Operating Values through work activities, actions, and behaviors.
 
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES - ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 
(Listed in order of time-spent or importance) Includes the following, but not limited to:
1.          Manages and performs Tool Room and Die Service/Build Up activities which includes, builds, modifications, repairs, purchasing and vendor functions, scheduling, and preventive maintenance.
2.          Performs die build up and teardown activities. Repairs die cavities by welding and cutting back to print standards. Evaluates and replaces die components as necessary. Operates crane, welder, towmotor, grinders, lathes, mills, etc.
3.          Manages and schedules tool and die work.
•           Coordinates with engineering and production staff to determine needs and priorities.
•           Maintains tooling schedule for repairs.
•           Establishes tool repair standards for time and labor. 
•           Makes recommendation of tool life based on repairs/cost to maintain tooling.
4.          Handles department administrative duties, including,
•           Managing vendor outsourcing functions, including quotes, pricing, schedules, quality of work, etc.
•           Ensuring vendors receive accurate prints and documentation of contracted work.
•           Maintaining strong vendor relationships.
•           Establishing purchase orders.
•           Establishing Capital expenditures for tooling department. 
•           Managing and maintaining tooling work order system in Plex.
•           Tracking all tooling life and makes recommendations for tooling replacement schedule.
5.          Maintains Tool Room equipment. Ensures proper care and maintenance of department equipment. Manages all routine servicing of machines.
6.          Monitors production problems and creates counter measures. Recommends and develops new processes and procedures and initiates/participates in their implementation.
7.          Ensures proper housekeeping and inventory of tools and materials. Develops and ensures safe practices are being followed related to tooling activities.
8.          Recommends department changes and new processes and procedures and participates in their implementation.
9.          Contributes to and supports the existence of a positive work environment through personal involvement by communicating, interacting, and behaving in a manner that promotes productive relationships with coworkers, supervisors, customers, and others with whom such relationships are important to the success of company operations.
10.        Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
11.        Evaluates team performance, productivity and work standards, maintains/builds teamwork, handles staff development, and recommends coaching and disciplining team members to supervisor.
12.        Serves on the plant leadership team.
 
JOB QUALIFICATIONS – Education, Certifications, Training, Experience
 
Required:  High School/GED, 5+ years related work experience
Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related degree, or Machine Shop Technology Certification and Tool and Die Journeyman’s card
Experience with large die cast tooling
            
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (required, unless stated as preferred) 
Computer, Technical, Mechanical, Mathematical and/or Scientific Skills
•           Proficient MS Word and Excel skills, and experience with tooling equipment software, Solidworks, and Adobe.
•           Advanced knowledge of lathe, milling machine, grinding machines, drilling and sawing machines, computer numerical control (CNC) machines, and other common machine tools.         
•           Advanced knowledge and understanding of die cast engineering, die cast processes and tooling.
•           Ability to perform mathematical calculations required to complete all principle duties and assigned tasks, including algebra, trigonometry, ratios, and proportions.
 
Communication Skills – Verbal, Written, Training, Presenting, etc.
•           Proficient oral and written communication skills. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, technical procedures, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
•           Ability to communicate effectively with all groups of team members and management.
•           Ability to train others and give constructive feedback to correct improper ways of performing job duties or to develop job skills.
 
Problem Solving skills and Decision Making Skills
•           Advanced problem-solving and decision making skills, demonstrating the ability to participate in or lead problem solving sessions, examine various process variables and sets of data and make decisions as to how to solve basic to complex problems, and to create or improve a process.
 
Leadership Skills and/or Project Management Skills
•           Proficient leadership skills, demonstrating the ability to lead and manage: 1) daily work area activities, 2) performance, productivity, quality and safety, and 3) team development.

Bottom Line Requirements:

1. High School or GED required. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
2. 5+ years of supervisory experience in a tool room setting.
3. Tool and Die Journeyman’s Card preferred.
4. Experience with Die Cast Tooling preferred.
